Choose a sharing method based on who needs access, the size of the files and whether both devices are on a trusted network.
Windows network sharing
Microsoft’s current guide explains sharing folders from File Explorer and accessing shared items over a network. Follow the steps for your supported Windows version; an old Windows XP tutorial is not suitable for a current computer.
Before you share
- Share a specific working folder instead of an entire drive.
- Give the recipient only the access they need, such as read access for reference documents.
- Check which account or group can open the folder.
- Use an authenticated service for remote collaboration and check link expiry and download permissions.
- Remove access when the exchange is complete and keep a separate backup.
Keep firewall and authentication protections enabled. If sharing fails, troubleshoot the intended permission and network settings rather than opening everything to everyone.
